Have you heard of sounding before and are curious as to this sexual phenomenon? Have you had friends tell you about it, or have you watched pornography and happened to see this activity? The curious read below for Sounding 101!

First of all...

What is Sounding?

Sounding is the act of slowly inserting a sounding rod or penis plug into the urethra of the penis to achieve enhanced pleasure and intense prostate orgasms.

Even though this is becoming more popular among individuals, it is still considered a “taboo” subject, and not always for the faint of heart.

So, why would someone try something that seems painful and uncomfortable? Well, it may be surprising to know that if done correctly and safely, it can cause intense amounts of pleasure - because it is the most direct way to the prostate! There are a lot of nerve endings in the head of the penis and urethra, and the urethra tends to be much larger in the penis than the vagina, which makes it easier for urethral play for penis owners.

If you are interested in trying out something new, exciting, and may give you that psychological thrill, here are some tips on how to safely do so:

  • Lots of practice and patience is needed. Maybe even more so than anal play. Always pay attention to how you feel when using these products. If there is any pain, extreme tightness, or pressure, you should stop. The slower the better!
  • Toy hygiene as well as washing your hands and penis before any insertion is recommended to avoid pushing bacteria into the urethra which can cause an UTI.
  • Use a sterile or surgical lubricant. Do not use any water based lubricant that has glycerin listed as an ingredient. Apply lubricant to the head of the penis by the opening of the urethra, as well as apply it to the plug or sounding rod.
  • Always purchase a rod or plug that is made from silicone, stainless steel, or titanium. Do not use any other type of material, and make sure that it isn't too thin and straight as it can puncture or cause abrasions. Our Pleasure carries quality sounding rods and plugs for both beginners and those looking to take it to the next level.

As a beginner, you may be wondering, “What is the difference between a penis plug and sounding rod?”

A penis plug is usually T shaped with ridges or notches to prevent it from slipping out and are generally shorter than sounding rods. Plugs can be worn during intercourse or masturbation, and can be hollow to allow semen or urine to pass though. You can also get plugs that are not hollow.

A sounding rod is generally longer, smooth and curved to reach the bladder for a more intense prostate experience. Sounding rods are meant to be moved slowly up and down to massage the inside of the penis - similar to the thrusting action during sex (though usually more gentle).

Both are a great option for a beginner, however sounding rods are mainly smooth, which will make it easier for insertion compared to a plug that has ridges.
